NOTICE ABOUT WEST NILE VIRUS: Elbert County Health asks you to help prevent West Nile Virus in Sun Country by doing the following:
- Drain standing water sources at least once a week.
- Treat ponds and stock tanks with BTI (available from Kiowa Conservation District 303-621-2070 or from garden, home and feed stores).
- Wear long pants and sleeves during dawn and dusk hours.
- Vaccinate horses.
- Apply insect repellent containing DEET over clothing and exposed skin.
- Aerate ornamental ponds or stock them with fish (available free at the Elbert County Health Dept.).
- If you have symptoms such as fever, severe headache and stiff neck, contact your healthcare provider.
Dead Birds: Report dead birds to The Elbert County Health Dept. Birds that have been dead less than 48 hours and are free from maggots may qualify for testing. To report dead birds call 303-721-3145 or 303-721-3193. Always wear gloves while handling dead birds, and remember to wash your hands afterwards.
